What led you to become a designer?

My mom. She has always been my role model. She's a strong, open-minded, independent woman and an unstoppable force of nature. She recognized my creative skills when I barely did. I loved sketching and building things since I was little, and she encouraged me. The more I stepped into the world of design, the longer I wanted to stay. It's almost as if I found my Disneyland!

What's one crazy personal project you'd love to undertake?

I'd love to build a house where every room was inspired by a different culture and time period. It would be my very own time machine. For example, I would fill my bedroom with modern adaptations of pieces from Indian culture, decorate my gardens and porch with Japanese motifs, and create a music room inspired by African cultures and art.

What is your design philosophy?

Live to learn! When I stop learning, I lose inspiration and become creatively exhausted. It almost like a fireplace on a winter night: Without the right fuel, it’s hard to keep it burning.

What was the inspiration for light you designed on Gantri?

Terr was designed to bring warmth into your life — to bring you one step closer to nature. I used tree bark and other natural textures as my inspiration. I wanted to reinforce the emotional connection between humans and nature. Hopefully, the light allows you re-discover the comfort of nature in the midst of a human-made world.

What's a previous project that you're proud of?

During college, I worked on a system design project at a senior citizen's home for blind women. I met some incredible women who just had the bare necessities. Their disabilities and the lack of funds actually created a wonderful design challenge for us. We developed a low-budget product system for their kitchens, personal items, and medicine storage. The joy that these little improvements brought the women made this project a complete blissful experience for me.

What inspires you in design / life in general?

People and nature. In a rapidly growing technological age, we often forget about the little things that make us happy. The smell of rain, the sound of a waterfall, the body heat of your pet, the laughter of your friends. I want my designs to remind people of these little moments of warmth.
