Michael Bennett, ex-NFL star and the creative force behind Studio Kër, crafts African-inspired furniture that intertwines his ancestral roots with contemporary design. Based in Hawaii, Bennett transforms each piece into a narrative, reflecting his personal journey from football to a path of self-discovery. This shift was more than a career change—it was a profound drive to reconnect with his African roots and translate the rich stories he has uncovered into tangible forms. In his studio, Bennett continues to blend his Louisiana upbringing with Senegalese influences, crafting pieces that are both artistic tributes and cultural conversations. Each design embodies a dialogue between Bennett's past and the modern world, merging traditional heritage with contemporary elements. Resulting in pieces that are more than furniture; they are expressions of identity, belonging and community, each one a call to communion and a celebration of life.

Going from the NFL to furniture design was all about finding a new method of expression and connecting with my roots. Furniture is deeply narrative for me—it's where the stories of my ancestors and my own journey come together in a tangible way. I love how a piece of furniture can do such a good job of telling stories that are both personal and universal.
African heritage is full of amazing art and tradition that I wanted to explore and celebrate with others. I got glimpses from my grandmother while growing up in Louisiana, and ever since I’ve been drawn to designs that capture the spirit and strength of those who came before me. Her influence led me to ask questions like, “What does love look like as a form?” and “What does Sunday dinner feel like?” Thinking through the answers and incorporating them into furniture allows me to make them a living part of modern homes.
Ursa Minor is another name for the Little Dipper, a light that has guided people and been a symbol of freedom and unity throughout history. It's always been more than just a constellation to me—it's a path through darkness. A gathering point and sign of hope. This light was made to be an extension of that. It's meant to spark conversation and deepen our connection to each other. It's inspired by nights under the stars, filled with stories that bridge cultures and generations.
I imagine Ursa Minor as the heart of the home, where its warm glow brings everyone a bit closer. It's not just about lighting—it's about creating a space that turns moments into memories. I see it sitting on the table, casting light on faces as people share stories, laughter or a meal. Like gathering around a campfire. I want it to create a space where the day winds down and the real connections light up.
